Environment and Climate Change Canada has ended a blizzard watch for Calgary, but the watch remains in effect for some surrounding areas as an intense cold front is forecast to bring heavy snow and strong winds.

The federal weather agency issued the warning just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday, notifying drivers of possible whiteout conditions on some roads across much of southern Alberta.

“Snow showers cause weather conditions to vary significantly; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometers are common,” the warning said. “Travel can be dangerous due to sudden changes in the weather. Visibility can be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero.”

ECCC says blizzard watches are issued when conditions are favorable for “short but intense” bursts of heavy snow.

The wait ended for Calgary at 2:15 p.m

While most of southeastern Alberta is under a blizzard watch, snowfall warnings have been issued for southwestern Alberta regions, with up to 20 centimeters expected overnight between Fort Macleod and Pincher Creek.

In Calgary, cool temperatures around the -15 C mark are expected throughout the week, with wind chills reaching into the -20 range. Storms are expected through Sunday night into Monday, with more snow expected to fall throughout the day Monday and Wednesday.
