A Calgary teenager is proving that every dollar counts when it comes to giving back. Ella Altvater is selling gift bags full of items she bought herself, with sales proceeds going to the Calgary Food Bank.
Altvater says she wanted to do her part for the community.
“Something fun for the kids, but also helps the parents and adults support their families,” she said.

Altvater saved more than $400 of her own money by doing odd jobs for her parents and the neighbors, like scrubbing the bathroom and walking dogs. It was enough to buy all the little things that go in the Christmas goody bags.
The bags include all kinds of things that children enjoy, such as toys, erasers, rings that light up and candy canes.
“Just some fun activities, Christmas quizzes and mazes. A sticker, a snap bracelet,” she says with a smile.
The gift bags are just $10. And according to her mother, Yvette King, Ella is on track to reach her goal of $1,000.
“To date, (she) has sold over $780 dollars,” says a proud king.
So why did Altvater choose the Food Bank?
It is simple. After Ella saw the statistics of how many families use the Food Bank in Calgary, she just knew she had to do her part.
“One dollar from us can equal $5 for the Food Bank, so it can go a long way for the kids to eat and the parents to eat,” Altvater explains.
“She said, ‘You know mom, no one here should be hungry.’ I’m pretty proud of her,” added Ella’s mother.
The gift bags are available on Facebook Marketplace and the donation will be made to the Food Bank on December 23.
