Several people who live in the area told Postmedia they were shocked by the news that a fatal shooting had occurred in their neighborhood, with some residents reporting that multiple gunshots were heard early in the morning.
CPS said they believe the shooting was targeted and homicide investigators were collecting CCTV footage from the area on Thursday. Later that day, a burned-out vehicle was found in Foothills County and was later determined to be connected to the shooting.
Police issued an update on Friday stating that they are currently searching for dashcam footage from various areas of the city that shows a 2022 Ford Expedition on December 15th. Investigators are looking for footage of Douglasdale Boulevard SE and eastbound 130 Avenue between 8:30 and 8:40 a.m., southbound Deerfoot Trail heading toward Highway 552 between 8:30 a.m. and 8:45 a.m., southbound Range Road 291 in Foothills County between 8:45 a.m. am and 9 am and 296 Avenue E to the 6400 block of 296 Avenue E between 8:45 am and 9 am
Police previously said they believed the suspect or suspects filled a container with gasoline before committing the murder and then used the fuel to set their vehicle on fire.
Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta with the homicide unit told Postmedia earlier on Friday that the shooting, which took place in a neighborhood near a school, could have been worse than it turned out to be.
“It could have been a multiple homicide scene yesterday, which is extremely scary,” Schiavetta said. “The people who perpetuate this violence have a complete disregard for public safety.”
