Black ice, blowing snow and poor visibility have prompted Alberta RCMP to extend their warning about hazardous driving conditions along Highway 2 throughout central Alberta.

RCMP issued an advisory on Saturday urging drivers to avoid the stretch of road between Red Deer and Airdrie. An updated statement Sunday morning noted that snow plows and other snow removal equipment were working to keep the road clear, but travel was still not recommended unless absolutely necessary.

Constable Kelsey Davidge with the RCMP said until the roads are cleared and/or until the temperature rises, it is likely that the poor driving conditions along Highway 2 north of Calgary will continue.

“If you don’t have to drive, don’t,” she said. “Continue to monitor 511 and plan accordingly.”

According to 511 Alberta, a handful of vehicle collisions along Deerfoot Trail complicated travel Sunday morning.

Extreme cold forced the closure of Zoolights on Sunday evening, with the zoo hoping to reopen the attraction on Monday, weather dependent.

WinSport Canada Olympic Park also issued a Monday closure for skiers and snowboarders due to extreme cold and closed their tubing park on Sunday, after opening for the season on Saturday.

Periods of light snow are expected to continue throughout the day in the city of Calgary on Sunday, turning into a 60 percent chance of flurries and a low of -24 C in the evening. The snow is forecast to clear by Monday, when a high of -22 C and an overnight low of -29 C are expected.
