The Calgary Board of Education said Thursday that its 2023-2024 school year will begin on Aug. 31, with 28 regular program schools abandoning a modified schedule that means classes run from mid-August to the end of June.

“The number of teaching hours in the school year remains unchanged,” the CBE said.

The changes, which return to what is known as a traditional calendar, come after parent consultations amid concerns about conflicting scheduling and other operational challenges facing families, a board superintendent said.

“We really wanted to make sure that some of our families that were expressing concerns about siblings sitting on two different calendars or other operational concerns that they might have, we really wanted to go out into the communities and find out their perspective on how the calendar is supported them and what challenges they may be facing,” Superintendent of School Improvement Andrea Holowka said last September.

She also said that no academic benefit resulted from the modified schedule.

The public consultation included in-person and virtual sessions last September and online surveys that began in October.
