The province has announced a five-year plan to build rural Alberta’s economy, bringing together several different projects into one cohesive strategy.

The plan, announced Wednesday by Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Nate Horner, is the result of a year of engagement with stakeholders and includes more than $1.5 billion in previously announced spending.

“The plan outlines a path forward that will address key issues in rural Alberta, including economic development enabling infrastructure, rural business support and entrepreneurship, support for workforce and skills development, marketing and promotion of rural tourism, and rural economic development capacity building.” he said.
Included in the plan is the $390 million broadband strategy, $933 million for irrigation infrastructure, $78 million for 133 capital maintenance and renewal projects, $59 million to expand the University of Calgary’s veterinary medicine program, a $70 million film and television tax credit, and $8 million for indigenous communities.
