CALGARY – The family of a Calgary teenager who was killed just steps from his home is now pleading for answers to understand the tragedy that took his life.
Sixteen-year-old Carter Spivak-Villeneuve was returning to his home in Abbeydale early Friday morning but never made it. According to his aunt, Candace Basque, he was only “half a block from his house.”
Police were called to the area of Abergale Drive and Abbeydale Drive around 1:20 a.m. following reports of a person in medical distress, but life-saving efforts were too late. The 16-year-old was found deceased. Following an autopsy, investigators officially ruled his death a homicide.
Basque, who helped raise her nephew since he was a baby, described him as one of her own. “Amazing child, very artistic. Very polite. He had a lot of friends. Very social,” she shared.
The unresolved nature of his death adds an agonizing layer to the family’s grief. “Somebody took his life,” Basque said. “So many unanswered questions. So many.”
The family is pinning their hopes on potential evidence from the community. “I just hope and pray that somebody got dashcam or something,” she added.
Homicide investigators are asking anyone in the area who might have seen suspicious activity or has dashcam or CCTV footage to contact them immediately.
In a tearful plea for justice, Basque urged the public to share any information they might have. “Help him rest. I know somebody knows something,” she said. “I need him to rest with his grandma and grandpa.”
A GoFundMe has been organized to help the family manage the unexpected funeral costs.
Police ask anyone with information to call them at 403-266-1234 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
