CALGARY – The Calgary Police Service is investigating a fatal collision in the city’s southeast that claimed the life of an 83-year-old woman last weekend.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, at the busy intersection of 17 Avenue S.E. and 31 Street S.E. in the community of Radisson Heights/Forest Lawn.
According to a police news release issued Friday, the 83-year-old pedestrian was struck by a Ford F-150 truck. Investigators have determined that the truck was turning right from northbound 31 Street onto eastbound 17 Avenue S.E.
“After the traffic signal turned green, the truck proceeded to turn,” the police statement read. “It is believed the woman entered into the path of the truck and was struck.”
Emergency crews transported the elderly woman to hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The driver of the F-150 remained at the scene and was not physically harmed.
The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section has taken over the investigation. At this early stage, investigators have stated that they do not believe excessive speed, alcohol, or drugs were factors in the collision.
This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers pedestrians face, particularly at busy intersections. The City of Calgary’s traffic safety framework emphasizes the protection of vulnerable road users, including seniors and those on foot.
Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the event or who has dash-cam recordings of the intersection from that time to come forward. Information can be provided to the Calgary Police Service non-emergency line at 403−266−1234. Anonymous tips can also be made to Crime Stoppers.
